Raspberry Pi corrupt SD Card

This afternoon there was a power outage in our area an consequently, the Pi was powered off without a proper shutdown command.

I thought this is not a problem, since I used the DiskTools on my Mac yesterday and make a disk image out of the SD Cards.

However, trying to restore from that image into the SD Card did not work :-(

I have experienced this sensitivity a few times earlier, e.g. had to re-install and start from scratch. Previously I installed the disk image using unix command dd, but this time I had done the installation with NOOBS, so the re-install was quick simply by booting with the shift-key down and re-installing Raspberian.

The strange thing is that on my other Raspberry Pi where I run RaspBmc, it never has crashed the card, despite repeated power-off without a proper shutdown.

I need to find out some proper procedures for:

  1. Creating a disk-image from the SD Card that can be restored at any time without problems
  2. Find out how to make the RPi more resistant to a power failure situation. Could the type of SD Card make a difference?
